Hiya guys,
Finished the Sat snd Sun Times this week (I think), but can't quite see the wordplay on one clue in each crossword, could you please explain them.

Sat Times.
26d) The sides to cheer out, fit for a crunch game (1-3) I,-p-. I have I,Spy.
Sun Times.
3d) Speed of old car - not the maximum speed (4) R-t-. I have Rate?

(c)rate

Should also say c=speed of light

I was thinking banger for old car, never thought of crate (and I've had a few in my time). And for some reason I thought E=speed of light, never knew it was C,

On the I Spy clue,
I was thinking the sides are something to do with parliament (Ayes to the right) Cheered out would be I's, but then I was thinking Spy was a crunched up Spry (Losing the R) which could mean Fit.
A bit tenuous, What do you think?

the other one. very contrived and probably wrong but.....

fit for a crunch = crisply.
take out c(cheer) and l/r (left and right sides)
leaves i spy.

How about....sides t cheer - cr

fit for a crunch - crispy

I think ixion's got it but i don't get the T bit.
sides of cheer = cr, remove cr from crispy.

Yes, I see how you get it now.
A bit bloody tricky if you ask me.
That's the kind of clue that you need letters in before you can solve it, and then work backwards to see how it's been gotten.
