Clue: Right by flag, thanks for simple shot (3-2)

I have the letters T-P/-N (and I'm fairly confident that they are all correct).

The only answer I can think of is TAP-IN, but I can't see wholly why. Thanks could be TA, but I'm stumped with the rest of it. All help welcome please!

8d: MILITIAMAN (but I'm not entirely sure why, so if anyone can explain this I'd be very grateful!)

Sorry - I meant to say (re 23a) - that the extra letter i is the "subject" (ie I; first person singular)

23ac is school subject = religious instruction = RI + anagram of accurate.

the other one.

fighter = militiaman.
theatre of war = (viet)nam.
until one = til i

objective = aim.

put it together backwards (up)
