The Joker,
I too am wondering why "nap" was dismissed without an explanation why. Not to worry, always more clues to get our teeth into!

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! Seems like I must
apologise for making a whole lot of wrong assumptions.
I just thought you guys were relishing solving these clues, so out of the sheer goodness of my heart I offered some clues for solution.
I didn't see any impoliteness in that!
Obviously I should have explained that I made all these clues up myself (including the biretta one!) - that explains how I knew the answers were wrong.
Why was nap wrong? Simply because it's not the answer I had in mind.
Testing you guys? Isn't that what all clues are supposed to do?
Why do you think so badly of me? I really wish I knew...

gurth, I don't think it's a big deal but you should have declared the fact that you had devised these clues. Otherwise people can get the wrong impression and think you're winding them up, which pretty much seems to be what happened !
Now we all know.

5. He's giving instruction in the river. (3)

6. One of the ubiquitous triplets is in the river already, but clearly not up to it yet! (4)

7. Who ate in the river? (6)

I would have given you the benfit of the doubt, but the "sheer goodness of your heart" bit made me feel a tad queasy. I'm sure you'll find people who enjoy being patronised but I'll not be one of them.

terry, please accept my sincere apologies if I have offended your delicate stomach in any way.
It's good to get some honest criticism and feedback!
More criticism from other disgruntled readers would also be appreciated: please let me hear your opinions of my style, I am anxious to learn how to mend my ways!

Try being honest and not devious would be a good start.
