Aceface - Cut is given in Chambers as a synonym for cross.

I used to so enjoy the weekly Mephisto. I know it's the same old complaint, but the trouble with this setter is that there's no wit or humour. With someone like Araucaria you feel that it's a pleasurable battle of wits, but here it's as if he's just trying to get one over on anyone trying to complete.

Am finding this a real slog, not much fun - maybe it'll get better once I get going.

Agree with you AJT - there's no pleasure in these mephistos, and clues must be a sentence that makes sense.
13ac is in Chambers, but not under 'see'.
