Eccles is right, the book is Ecclesiastes (cut in half).

Your answer of SMELT could be correct as you would not eat something that smelt(smelled).

Thanks Joker, it does seem the only answer---can now get on and do a bit of gardening !

A smelt is a fish, member of the salmon family. Apparently it smells like a cucumber, but you definitely wouldn't want to eat it if it "smelt".
