I wonder if anbody can help me with this?
1aCopper seizes pot,to be taken back for specialised
study(8) BA??LOG? The third letter may be T and the
only answer I can think of is BATOLOGY which is the
study of brambles.

LOTA is a type of water bottle / pot.
BOGY is slang for a policeman / copper.

So, you're right about BATOLOGY, I think.

Hi folks,

Less of a grind this week, or perhaps I was more up to the 'merk' ! The 'popular' version of that word was interesting - for an idle moment or two I pondered who wore/wears such an item (and why)!

The number of times I have been to Italy and yet I had never heard of the 21d.

I have put MESE for this;mese is a keynote,ME is the
third note of the tonic-solfa scale +SE,but what is the connexion with displaced native people?

I'm afraid that, as often with Mephisto, once I had a key link between the clue and apparent answer (Note=mese) I made the 'leap of faith'. The only Asian people link with MESE I can find is MACANESE, which may be quite irrelevant ! The Macanese are an old Portugese colony in a region of China. Unfortunately, ACAN doesn't seem to be a 'native' that can be 'displaced' to leave 'mese'.

Hopefully all will become clear.

MESE comes from the letters of Vietnamese minus the letters of native

I got round to this crossword today.

The explanation for 15a is to remove an anagram of 'native' from 'vietnamese' to give 'mese'.

As for 21d, I think the police in question may have only operated in areas controlled by the Pope and so may not be widespread across Italy but only within an internal state (ie the Vatican).
