A word meaning Feeble (WEAK) is the answer.

"A period of time, it's said" tells you that the answer sounds like the word Week.

On reflection, it could be weak.

Er...no. I call for a recount! In any case, it's not like a general election, decided by the greatest number of votes.

This clue is clear enough as to which one is the answer. That is not always the case with this type of clue in my experience but this one is.
