Spurs, at the end mostly rubbish, suddenly slip back(6).

I don't get the rubbish reference. Have an idea for an answer (a word relating to spurs (noun)) but still can't work the clue.

Solutions would be gratefully received.

This will help with a crossing DOWN clue.

Thaks, terry. That's the word I had relating to spurs. Got the SLEW but not the ROT reference.
