From an old Times Crossword.

Bills inscribed with American president's name(5).

A - - - -

This should be easy but...I can think of a couple of names that would fit but can't work the clue. Adams - I don't think it's that. Alfie? Why? "Bill" can signal AC in crosswords but here? Bills = ACCTS? Still stuck.
Any ideas or solutions gratefully received.

Hidden among cast, top performer's denied lead (9).

- - - - T - R - D

Originally I was thinking of plaster cast, but if the first letter is S, as ADAMS would dictate, might it be a different sort of cast or an anagram of CAST with something else? SCATTERED, say, would fit?
So would words like SHELTERED or SHUTTERED. Although I don't get the workings.
Any ideas or solutions appreciated.
