Sorry Folks, I've only just twigged, the 3 words are synonyms of an anagram of the clue, eg the first one is cave, study, lair (anagram of cavalier's duty). I think the second one must be name, score, sign.

You have to match DEN (cave/study/lair)
and MARK (name/score/sign)with 9d & 29d.
