think i've got it but don't like the first bit meaning before?

see it now - Chambers defines the first bit as "in the prescence of" which seems OK for before

Thanx a lot guys. It gives me quite a boost to have such excellent crossie folk give my efforts a go.

Just to give a bit of provenance to "by"

You children be home before/by midnight!

Also Chambers Thes has BY + BEFORE
while the Concise Oxford Thes had BY = BEFORE and BEFORE = BY.

Dunno what happened to Tony, though.

Jolan,

Another very good set. I think the bypass one was perfectly fair, the problem was me. I got as far as realising that the answer would end with an S, and would relate to skirts (or before). Just didn't get any further without a crossing letter or two. Hey ho, not the end of the world,nobody died.
