Stuck on 2 down, 13 across, 21 across

For 2 down I've got Glean - to gather (hopefully collect can include that!), the director David Lean, and the note G.
Did you mean 13 down, as there's no 13 across - I've got an anagram, beryllium - a metal
And for 21 across I've got Alumni - obviously old boys, in backwards, and alum being a compound. Hope this helps.

I also thought of Alumni but again was puzzled over alum
