It's starting to look like I've got something wrong somewhere... !

ENHANCED? Does this answer cross the other one, giving you some of its letters?

Hi Sammy, the 'M' in 14 across is from MECHANICS, as is the first 'C' in 19 across, the second C being from EXUBERANCE.
The second A in 14 across is from exuberance too.

So there is a lot holding those letters there.... Clues for the ABOVE are 3 down - High spirits (10)and 15 down - Structure, arrangement (9)

Hi lucky, MECHANICS doesn't feel right to me for structure or arrangement.
Could be something like FRAMEWORK or FORMATION perhaps? Would either of those fit with other letters you have?

Finally cracked it! Thanks Sammy - you're dead on with FORMATION- it fits with AFFRAY and gives me 19 across 'Increased the quality of' as ENRICHED. The 'ICS' ending I had (MECHANICS) is infact ION as 'Water holder' is CANTEEN not CISTERN (!)

It was one of those crosswords where you can find an answer that fits, but it's wrong, and throws you off for a lot more of the puzzle.

Anyway, thanks so much for your help, Sammy. I am finished and relieved! :)

Aha, ENRICHED! Glad it all worked out in the end, lucky. It's always satisfying when you've got the last piece of the jigsaw.
