If the answer's 'tripod', I can see 'stand', but what's the connection with 'gangster'?

It isn't tripod. The definition is gangster. Try the wordplay:- "is to" stand up. By the way, it is generally accepted that the definition is either first or last in a clue - not the middle.

Came up with 'prow' which can be used to mean 'boat' as well as meaning the front part of a boat. I don't know what this would have to do with the rest of the clue - Grumpy Orcadian dwarf, drizzly mist etc. Oh, and I'm not 100% certain of the 'r' I've got as the second letter.Any advice,thoughts?

it's drow - dow is the boat, drow the mist, don't get the beg part of the clue tho!
