I don't understand the instructions for this crossword. Have so far managed to solve only four clues. can someone give me an example of how it works. Thanks.

There are 10 clues , definition is normal, cryptic part is missing letters (the missing letters are a british river) Other clues are normal.
Another clue has a "HOLY" river at the beg.

eg

Q Ass guide?

ans Donkey

(Don being the river)

The 'rivers' are not clued separately but can be identified in the overall clue.
For example-
12a So free not to vote for police department.
P AIRD D....MP's are paired so don't have to vote. AIRE (river) in PD (police department)

16a Xerophyte is king...TAMARISK ( a xerophyte)
TAMAR (river) IS K(ing)

Thank you, all of you. I get it now. Have managed to do another five. Is 14d 'dribblers'? How does that relate to doctors?

DS (doctors) + RIBBLE (river) = dribblers (footballers)

Tilly - if you type in your first letter, your name should come up. Similarly with email address
