a substance = pith appearing in EET (eet is tee inverted). epithet is a word meaning description.

Could be a salt (seaman) who has turned = atlas.

that's as far as I can go . Is there a clue 53. if there is this answer is related to it.

Atlas is all I could come up with but I'm not sure. The answer to 53 is range and I can't see the connection.

it is atlas. range/mountains. atlas mountains are in north africa.
