I'm baffled by the instructions. If the initial letter is ignored, does that mean, say, if the solution is 'angels' the cryptic clue will be to ngels?

That's exactly right - ignore the initial letter -- but the cryptic part of the clue will be attached to a different clue from the group of 7 clues whose answers begin with that letter. Look at the other thread on this forum begun by sudukolover, which gives some helpful advice on tackling this puzzle. Once you get a few, it's not too hard.

Thanks Mischka! I've done a few (I think) just on the definitions, but i hope now i can make some more progress.
