I think someone gave the answer to this as Connived.

thanks,trevor. i have connived put down,but a clue which crossed it was"work done by a person or a machine",so i was thinking"labour",which would mean the 2nd letter in the original clue would be "L".confusing,isn't it? cheery-!,krisstoff.

I think I agree with Labour too

Labour is not really work done by a machine - would OUTPUT not be better as it fits with CONNIVED? If that doesn't fit in with the other answers, perhaps you could tell us what they are.
