?A?E - Connect mechanically. Would someone be kind enough to put me out of my misery please. I have put in every other answer for this crossword but I can't see what this is. The answer is NOT cryptic!

only possibility I can come up with is 'MATE' which is a term used in engineering when two pieces of metal are connected.

I had looked at the word 'mate' in Chambers, Encarta, Collins and the Concise Oxford dictionaries and none gives that precise definition but I can't see what else it could be...
