Seen earlier thread that says the answer to 10a is 'suited and booted'. Apparently its an anagram of 'I'd be astounded to'.

Terry - I realised where you went wrong it wasn't 16 letters, it was only 15 letters - otherwise I'm sure you would have got it.

By the way I think you should give Jolan his last remaining answer as you worked it out.

It is cane, albeit with ! in the middle. not sure that's fair.

Terry - I thought that was probably the answer (but only because of your clue) - it feels like an unnecessarily wordy clue for the answer but maybe I'm missing something.

I don't think you are missing anything and what you say is reasonable. Jolan always tries to give five different types of clue. As soon as I saw "retaining" I knew I was looking for a word for staff.
