Stuck on a small clue and a small word at the end of an old prize crossword.
A down clue. It's the last one, a simple one with nearly all the letters, a limited number of possible answers and I can't figure it out! Aaaargh...
Shilling cut, point rise(5).
S - O - E
\i'm thinking "Shilling cut" could mean S (abbrev. for shilling), S C or maybe even SH, so could be something like SCORE but I can't make sense of the whole clue. Is the point rise an indication of reversed letters or is the answer RISE (either as a verb to rise or a noun meaning a hill or incline)? Could it be something to do with a SCORE being twenty and a shilling being a twentieth of a pound?
