Morning Everyone!

I think I have the answer here but not the explanation. Can anyone help ease my furrowed brow?

22a Shoot to noisily cut out thousand (5)
?T?L?
I'm thinking stalk (for shoot as in plant) but I don't get the rest

Good Morning LesleyD

Noisily (sounds like) cut out = stall
K = thousand

Thanks geting - I was puzzled by that one too. Still am, in fact; why is cut out stall? The sounds like doesn't work anyway, as the L in STALK isn't pronounced.

I agree Chrise. If my interpretation is correct it's not a good clue

I thought that this wasn't the only clunky clue in this puzzle. Not up to the usual standard.

Don't engines stall, cut out?

Thanks malone - that will be it.

I still pronounce it "stawk", though!

Thank you everyone - I was thinking of the Roman 1000 so trying to see what an 'M' could have to do with any of it!
I think the 'noisily' is a bit of a red herring. We normally expect it to denote a 'sounds like' kind of word but I think it may be more literal - when my car engine stalls, it doesn't do it silently!
