I'm really enjoying this but, despite having solved about 80% of it, I still don't know the game in question or how to treat the down answers! On we go ... 😜

Too early for giveaways! I spotted a possible word in the location, and it started to fall into place.

I second that. Pointer is definitely one of the elite, in my book. We were blessed to have him and Sabre this weekend. I have assumed that row 3 should not show the name of the game in the completed grid, because it has to show the names of the players and location. I have further assumed that the possible ambiguity of the unchecked letters is resolved by the way the second entry is inserted into the first, if that makes sense. I might be totally wrong, of course!

That's how I saw it quisling, the entries in row 3 follow the rules of the game
