It's made up from several bits to mean "with care". Old but nice word for "pretty".

Just got to the crossword after a long and even busier than usual day and not doing very well. I am pretty tired. So how do I make 16ac from the bits. I have the first letter.

Can you confirm that 5d is a US city? I thought of one, but can't parse the second word.

Hints for 14d would may open up other solutions for me. The clue is Lacking funds, you do this in hostelry, clearly gutted.

First part of second word is a 'plot' not a plan but outdoors.

14d 'you do this' means what you are actually doing when crosswording.

First 2 words of clue are definition.

I think I have the answer to 5d. It is not the big city I thought it was, but a smaller one. I had thought of the outdoor area.

I am still stuck on 14d and have decided to call it a day as I am too tired and can no longer read the clues. I shall sleep on it.
