T?A?A?O? - all I can see that fits with these letters and the theme is a word for the personification of death, but if so can't see the parsing.


4d "Unsound notion, as a member reported?" (7)

?A?L?C? is this a word a reference to member that more usually has the second letter as O rather than A?

Any help much appreciated

Found it!
id definition is "current measure". The first 2 letters are "degree up"; last 6 is whimsically "furious exercising".
12a the priests are Buddhist
15a old word for "consider" around a top journalist, then A.
