Stuck on last two in NW corner so strong clues appreciated:
1D A man under roof of chapel is plastering (6) C???N?
9A Gesture of defiance contrary for artist (5) ??O?S
I assume that they are both painters?

1d plastering is the def - a man could also be called a piece.
9a 'Gesture of defiance' backwards to give a contemporary american artist (aged 61).
