OK, another glitch ?

Don't use the left angle bracket (to the right of the M key). It seems to delete everything after it.
If I have time I'll test it tomorrow. Are there other problem keys ?

I've frequently found that going backwards through the directory levels in an address, i.e. /X/Y/Z
will find a usable location, though not necessarily what one is looking for.

On iPad all those quirky angle keys etc. have their own separate keyboard, as do the numbers

I'm not quite sure what you meant. It's not about numbers.
The problem seems to be a particular word - "star".

the URL changes to this, dropping "?thread-page=":

Following pages have an offset, e.g.;
http://www.crosswordsolver.org/forum/430667/offset/10
This is quite handy if you wish to send someone a link to a particular post.
Just subtract 1 from the post number & change the offset accordingly.

Unfortunately, this site has disabled all HTML code & provided only 3 tags for B, U, I.
Makes it difficult, if not impossible, to display any other characteristics.

Just to say that I am away this weekend so am not dealing with Admin. I have, however, emailed Ash to let him know about the problem. Hopefully he will he able to resolve the difficulties soon.

Weekends are not the best times for issues on the Forum but it's amazing how often they crop up then!
