33d is an anagram. Last word is the definition, with a misprint, and a rather obscure spelling which I think I saw in another barred crossword a week or two ago.

Actually 33d def is last 3 words sorry.

Done all, including dealing with the three normal clues, except the 12 cell representation of the thematic alternative associated with the group (which I know, of course). It also strikes me that I have not made use of the title. I gather it is amusing. Not sure how much anyone can help without breaking the rules.

foinaven - I think the title refers to both the first and second definitions of “course” in Chambers and Southern represents both direction and place. This ties into the two main elements of the theme. I may have missed something though.
The 12 cells are tricky if you don’t know the particular thematic alternative. I found a word in the grid loosely connected to the theme and the penny dropped. The representation is very slightly cryptic.

In 39a the def is the first 3 words with an alteration in the 3rd of them; wordplay is tee within a 3-letter tree and a standard abbreviation for line
