Can I please ask for guidance on 1d and 2d please?

Is 1d an anagram?

1d is two letters for dad (reversed, so going up in a down clue) inserted into a word for contradict. The whole word means censure.

2d parses 6 (something you’d wear in summer), 4 (blue… politically speaking … on this side of the Atlantic that is)

It's happened again. It's 1A and 17A that I can't work out - got the artist in 17A but can't understand why. Apparently nobody else had a problem with these while I could do 2D and 11D that foxed other people.

Hi Helen,

1a - is a double definition with "fly" as in 'hurry' or 'move quickly'

17a - 4 letter "deviate" (off a course, maybe) goes around 3 letter "questionable offering" as in expressing hesitation or doubt in speech.

That was a bit tougher than last week but almost all clues solvable.

As a non-Brit I had to do a bit of research to get 9A "Diligent student trails back" — a slang term I hadn't heard before.

And as for 10A, I am just guessing at the unchecked letters and will gladly welcome a (gentle) hint.

Hi Daz,

10a - 4 letter "supports" (think ladies clothing) + 6 letter "chain" as in a sequence - definition is "restaurants"
