I think it's fair. Chambers gives the 4 letter word as a stand alone generic term for various sorts of the thing.

I think 5d is ok. The first four words are the definition, with the cryptic fodder being 'meat that's wrapped right'.
Does that make sense?

b) an answer to a prize crossword
c) unnecessary as the poster had some time before appreciated my hint
