Some I can't parse today, and the fifteensquared blog isn't up yet. Can anyone help, please?

I have PICK HOLES. It means "to carp" OK, but I don't see the rest.
15ac Bitter start to a cry from the heart (5)
I have ACRID - def. OK and start to A CRy, but is ID "heart"?
23 ac Desert state currency in order (7)
I have DRYNESS, which is the state of a desert, but.....?
6dn Function of the man or the woman at the top (5)
I have NORTH - it's a hidden word, it's "at the top" (and also he was a PM), but there seem to be a lot ofunnecessary words in the clue.

a + start to (cri d)e coeur (cry from the heart)?

DRESS is order, and (I'm guessing) YN is the symbol for the Yen

23 YN is Yen I think in order or dress

6 North is hidden in maN OR THe woman

At the top is definition
