Jigjag and Xwordfan, I actually thought the preamble was cleverly done! It refers to putting a symbol in 'all but one of the overlong down answers', but that doesn't mean ALL down answers are overlong, we've just to put symbols in those that are. Sneaky... but not wrong?

Sorry to be so thick but i don't know what to replace the runs with in the downs and 16d doesn't have a run ??

22a makes no sense

Scarlett - For 22ac a similar entry could be D.I.V.O.R.C.E but this time the interruptions suggest 'key variation'.
Change the last 5 letters of 22ac making new words.

... and 'run' isn't the correct synonym - something similar is required ('elan', 'em' or 'minus' should help).

Because of visitors yesterday I am only just getting into this. (22 clues still to solve,) I thought originally that the symbol would appear only along the theme line but for 31 down I have links. Could somebody please enlighten me.

LINKS is the double letter one referred to in the preamble.

I am finished but with one to do 15d Odd job in ruined city, I have BU _______T , word length not known.

Don, there's a four-letter thematic inside, the actual answer is nine letters long.
