I have several down answers that just seem to fit in i.e. correct number of letters and fit the crossers, and some that are too long? What is going on here?

Doh!.... i thought the preamble meant EVERY down clue was too long for its space!!!

I have the 3rd edition of the Oxford Dictionary of English and 21a is not in it. Perhaps there is a later edition?

Also the spelling of 29a is not in Chambers.

I meant to say 26a, as in the preamble, not 21a!

I think GAMUT, bunty. That certainly gives the correct answer for 20a. Gamut is a scale, as you say, and it also means the whole range 0-12 for all the notes in a musical scale (including semitones.

So 20a, the defn is "in tune" - an old spelling for a word meaning something that is correct.

You are right - it does mean that. It should have said some of the down clues....

Luckily I got 17d quickly so didnt waste time.
