I took teenieleek's advice and started filling the grid.
The grid was complete except for one.

Looking like Paddington ...
I have 8 letter answer meaning horse. But not sure how to parse it.

The first answer in last row seems to be the seventh clue.
I have P?ES. Not sure what to make of it.

Any hint welcome.

Combine P?ES with "rind" and you can get "inspired".

I think Paddington in the clue is off putting so ignore that word. You want a word meaning looking at something fixedly or vacantly and put in an L (for Lima) to get an 8-letter bird. It's thematic.

I forgot I had to put Pies someplace.
