21a: Having captured a prisoner, the German left hurriedly, according to the Americans? (4,1,6).
It looks like "Took a header". Can see "took a" also "der" for the German but stuck on parsing "hea".
Can anyone put me out of my misery?

Thanks rusty. Not an expression I've heard, but it sounds better. Have to look at the down clue that gave me the "e".

Hello, Despard.
"Took a powder" is an American phrase meaning "left hurriedly" or "scrammed".
