4d Square county in Scotland (6)

Answer has to be COHERE (I think, co=county, here=in Scotland).

Can't really see a good link to the definition "Square" though...

Can anyone explain it?

Argyll ?
Argyll/Argyle is a pattern of squares/diamonds.

cohere - to fit together

square - to make equal, to fit
