Cheers chrise, but as I said I'm not (and have no real desire to be) familiar with our feathered friends but to me (I reiterate a non-expert) the one in the picture immediately below the stoat/weasel appears to have long legs compared to its body and overall size.

It depends on the comparison - I suppose in comparison with its body size they are quite long, but compare this!:

I accept they're longer (relatively) and neither are stork like but as much as i appreciate the lesson and your undoubted enthusiasm for the subject we are digressing. I look forward to a better or the true parse and until then I'm going to accept my encyclopaedia entry.

Just an iffy clue, I think, ginge (yes, I have been a birdwatcher for over 50 years!)

I am a birdwatcher (not twitcher) and agree the rail has long legs

Cheers jazzy (genuinely, you have such a diversity of interests, how do you find the time, says he "wasting" yet another day in the boozer) that would be my "lay" idea of an average bird's legs (apologies that expression conjures up non-ornithological images!).

One of my pastimes (when I am not idling on here) is wildlife photograpy, mostly deer, birds and butterflies.
I am an avid lepidopterist.. (.. they can't touch you for it ! ). I am re-learning the accoustic guitar at the moment. It has L plates on it :(
