Stuck on one. I think I know the answer but cannot work out why:

44 across: do very little to attack in flying formation. The letters I have are: -e-e-a-e and I think the solution is delegate.

do very little = vegetate
etat = (as in coup d'etat = attack)
V = flying formation.
Not sure of the rest !

Attack is GET AT and the formation is VEE

One inside t'other gives VEGETATE
