Hello everyone
A new kid on the block here - I have been reading all your posts with enjoyment and hope that I can contribute. I have been doing the RT crosswords for a good many years and did win once - when the prize was £50 book tokens, so am ever hopeful that I might be lucky again.
Now for my query - can anyone please give me a hint for 5 down? I have _R_N_C but perhaps I have gone wrong somewhere with the across clues. Good wishes to all.

Doh! Having looked at my post I can now see the solution - a synonym for 'wry' and found within the clue. Your collective brilliance obviously worked its magic on me!
