Can you find the word that can either precede or follow each of the following four words. (it wont be a short filler word, or conjunction, like up, out, in, etc.)

CHECK, ORDER, RUN, & WORK

Technically that works but the crossword book generally will have an answer that's like a typical word not like a filler word that's usually two letters. I guess because those type of words can really work with anything

Out? Would that be allowed? I think it works very well.

Well I was referring to "In" but "Out" would be the same thing. Its not that these arent legit answers that fit, but past experience, these kind of puzzles look more for a common word rather than a conjunction of some sort that would work with nearly every word. Does that make sense? So that it forms more of a compound phrase.

RUNBACK, BACKWORK, BACK ORDER and CHECK BACK
are all supported by Collins online.

… the first two are in Chambers with definitions I wouldn’t have known.

I didn't know the Chambers definition of runback either, and I'm a tennis player. However, it is a common term in American football.
